The U.S. Central and Southern Province, Society of Jesus, has selected Fox Architects to complete project-section-1project-section-2the architectural and interior design of the new Jesuit Archives for the Central United States. This $10 Million facility will be located at 3920 West Pine Boulevard in St. Louis’ Central West End.

Multiple concepts were created to adapt the existing 1920’s era manufacturing facility as the Archive’s new home, however structural problems with the building envelope necessitated the design of a new building on the site.  The Jesuit’s tasked Fox with designing a building which protects the collection, reaches out to the community at large, and demonstrates the Jesuit mission of education and service to others.  The design creates a broad, open entry off West Pine, with a light filled reading and research room.  These areas surround a hardened archival storage shell located away from the street.  The building is much more than a storage receptacle for the past.  Large meeting rooms and exhibition spaces will combine scholarship of Jesuit history with response to current day events.

The new Jesuit Archives facility will house collections from the Central and Southern Provinces including Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Puerto Rico, and Belize. The estimated date of completion is late 2017.
