|The internet has exponentially increased the use of quotations. Quotations have shaped our culture. People love quotes – in a few words they can sum up big ideas, tell a joke or make you think long and hard about the world. How many emails do you get each day that contain a quote at the end?
Many people have a saying that becomes their “rule to live by”. My friend Bob Bednar from Wash U undergrad had a couple I love. His were “at any time, and as often as you want, you are allowed to change your mind” and “have no regrets”. I’ve repeated them many times – I especially like the no regrets thought.
Anyone who knows me well knows I’m a huge fan of the Simpson’s, and I love quoting Homer. My personal favorite is “Bart, if you want something in this life you have to work for it: now quiet down, they’re about to announce the lottery numbers”.
I love the twisted logic of Stephen Wright – “I intend to live forever. So far, so good.” or “Last year I went fishing with Salvador Dali. He was using a dotted line. He caught every other fish.”
I think the best quotes are inspirational. I especially love Eleanor Roosevelt’s “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”.
I love Gandhi’s “Be the change that you want to see in the world.”
A few days ago I heard someone say “we came over in different ships, but we’re all in the same boat now”. Fantastic.
The libermeister himself, Frank Lloyd Wright is a wellspring of quotes.
“A doctor can bury his mistakes but an architect can only advise his clients to plant vines. “
“Give me the luxuries of life and I will willingly do without the necessities.”
“Why, I just shake the buildings out of my sleeves.”
– or my favorite, said to Herbert Johnson (Johnson Wax), sitting in his brand new FLW designed house at dinner with friends, rainwater leaking through the skylight onto his head. He calls Wright from the table to complain and Wright says “Hib, move your chair”.
Best architecture quote of all time – Sir Winston Churchill – “We shape our buildings – thereafter they shape us”.
